Open Access Research Publishing: Open Access Research Awards 2025

The 12th annual HSE Open Access Research Awards were presented in Dr Steevens’ Hospital library on 11th December. The HSE CEO Bernard Gloster, presenting the awards, paid tribute to the work of the researchers. He drew attention to the real-world applications of the winning papers, and the importance of research in finding solutions to rapidly-evolving health crises.

Dr Ana Terrés, head of the HSE Research and Development Office, spoke about the work of HSE R&D in developing a centralised research ethics system, to make it easier for researchers to get projects off the ground. She stressed the importance of Open Access as a means of making research available to everyone.

Prof. Jonathan Drennan, the external judge for the awards, discussed themes arising out of this year’s winning papers. He paid particular tribute to the clarity and rigour of the overall winning entry.
