Bereavement and grief: Childhood and adolescent bereavement

Resources and information on bereavement and grief for the public and healthcare professionals.

Understanding children's grief

Children and adolescents grieve in their own way after death, and their reaction will depend on the circumstances of their loss. A child's way of grieving can be quite different from an adult's.

Children's grief often comes in waves; children tend to dip in and out of grief rather than have prolonged periods of grief. As with adults, there is no 'right' way to grieve, and most children find a way to cope with loss.

A new resource from ICBN: Supporting Children with Additional Needs

Children and young people with additional needs are no different but may need extra help with their understanding and ways to express feelings. Whilst we may not know exactly what a child or a young person with learning disabilities understands when someone close to them dies, they will be aware of that person’s absence and of the changes in their own life that may result.

Ten ways to support a child's grief is a short ICBN video (1.31 minutes) to provide some key guidance for adults supporting a bereaved child or young person.

An Introduction to Children's Grief,  produced by the Irish Childhood Bereavement Network

Finding your way through grief is a short ICBN video (3.34 minutes) in collaboration with St Francis Hospice providing information & support for teenagers and young people who have been bereaved.
