How to gain access to library e-resources remotely.

Proxy Server

If you have an active Library account, you can connect with the University’s proxy server to gain access remotely.

 

This service is only available for currently enrolled/ employed University/ Intercollege students and staff.

Choose the browser or device you use from the menu on the left and follow the instructions to change your proxy settings and gain access.

 

Mozilla Firefox

Configuration Directions for Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox
  2. Click “Open Menu” icon ≡ (top-right corner)
  3. Select “Options”
  4. In the “General” section, scroll down until you see “Network Proxy” and click “Settings…”
  5. Select the “Manual proxy configuration” radio button
  6. In the box following “HTTP Proxy” type: proxy.unic.ac.cy
  7. In box following “Port” type: 8080
  8. Check "Use this proxy server for all protocols" tickbox
  9. Click “OK” to close the Connection Settings window
  10. Close the Options tab
  11. The proxy server responds with a login window (if not, refresh/ reload your page), insert your:
  • Username: Student ID number (e.g. U000N0010) or Library User ID (for staff)
  • Password: date of birth in reverse order yyyymmdd (e.g. 19870218)

When approved, you will be able to access all library e-resources (i.e. UNIC Library Search, Databases, E-Journals, and E-books - see Start with eResources section).

When you have finished searching Library e-resources, be sure to go back to the connection settings window (Steps 1-4) and select the “No Proxy” radio button. Click “OK” to close the window and close the Options tab.

Available to active UNIC users 24 hrs after registration with the Library.

Google Chrome

Configuration Directions for Google Chrome:

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. Click “Customize and Control Google Chrome” button (top-right corner)
  3. Select “Settings”
  4. Scroll down and click “Advanced”
  5. Under the section System, click “Open proxy settings”
  6. Select the “Connections” tab and click on the “LAN Settings” button
  7. Make sure both “Automatically detect settings” and “Use automatic configuration script” are unchecked
  8. Check the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” box
  9. In the box following “Address” type: proxy.unic.ac.cy
  10. In box following “Port” type: 8080
  11. Click “OK” in both windows (don't just close them)
  12. Close the Settings tab
  13. The proxy server responds with a login window (if not, refresh/ reload your page), insert your:
  • Username: Student ID number (e.g. U000N0010) or Library User ID (for staff)
  • Password: date of birth in reverse order yyyymmdd (e.g. 19870218)
When approved, you will be able to access all library e-resources (i.e. UNIC Library Search, Databases, E-Journals, and E-books - see Start with eResources section).

When you have finished searching Library e-resources, be sure to go back to the settings window (Steps 1-6), check the “Automatically detect settings” box and uncheck the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” box. Click “OK” to close both windows and close the settings tab.

Internet Explorer

Configuration Directions for Internet Explorer:

  1. Open Internet Explorer

  2. Select “Tools” from the Internet Explorer menu bar

    • If this is hidden, press the Alt key on the keyboard and the menu bar will show up

  3. Select “Internet Options” from the pull-down menu

  4. Select the “Connections” tab and click on the “LAN Settings” button

  5. Make sure both “Automatically detect settings” and “Use automatic configuration script” are unchecked

  6. Check the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” box

  7. In the box following “Address” type: proxy.unic.ac.cy

  8. In box following “Port” type: 8080

  9. Click “OK” in both windows (don't just close them)

  10. The proxy server responds with a login window (if not, refresh/ reload your page), insert your:

  • Username: Student ID number (e.g. U000N0010) or Library User ID (for staff)
  • Password: date of birth in reverse order yyyymmdd (e.g. 19870218)
When approved, you will be able to access all library e-resources (i.e. UNICLibrary Search, Databases, E-Journals, and E-books - see Start with eResources section).

When you have finished searching Library e-resources, be sure to go back to the settings window (Steps 1-4), check the “Automatically detect settings” box and uncheck the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” box. Click “OK” to close both windows.

Microsoft Edge

Configuration Directions for Microsoft Edge:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge

  2. Click “Settings and more” button ... (top-right corner)

  3. Select “Settings”

  4. Scroll down and click “View advanced settings”

  5. Under the section Proxy setup, click “Open proxy settings”

  6. Go to the Manual proxy setup section and turn on “Use a proxy server” option

  7. In the “Address” field type: proxy.unic.ac.cy

  8. In the “Port” field type: 8080

  9. Click the “Save” button

  10. Close the Settings window

  11. The proxy server responds with a login window (if not, refresh/ reload your page or open a new page), insert your:

  • Username: Student ID number (e.g. U000N0010) or Library User ID (for staff)
  • Password: date of birth in reverse order yyyymmdd (e.g. 19870218)

When approved, you will be able to access all library e-resources (i.e. Library Search, Databases, E-Journals, and E-books - see Start with eResources section).

When you have finished searching Library e-resources, be sure to go back to the proxy settings window (Steps 1-5), turn off the “Use a proxy server” option and close the window.

Mac Browsers

Configuration Directions for MAC Browsers:

  1. Choose “Apple menu > System Preferences”

  2. Click on “Network”

  3. Choose the network you use from the list (e.g. Wifi) and click “Advanced…”

  4. Select the “Proxies” tab

  5. Check the “Web Proxy (HTTP)” box

    1. In the “Web Proxy Server” fields appeared on the right type: proxy.unic.ac.cy  :  8080

    2. Select the “Proxy server requires password” checkbox and insert your:

      • Username: Student ID number (e.g. U000N0010) or Library User ID (for staff)

      • Password: date of birth in reverse order yyyymmdd (e.g. 19870218)

  6. Check the “Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)” box

    1. In the “Secure Web Proxy Server” fields appeared on the right type: proxy.unic.ac.cy  :  8080

    2. Select the “Proxy server requires password” checkbox and insert your:

      • Username: Student ID number (e.g. U000N0010) or Library User ID (for staff)

      • Password: date of birth in reverse order yyyymmdd (e.g. 19870218)

  7. All of the other boxes under “Select a protocol to configure” should be unchecked

  8. Click “OK” and then “Apply”

  9. Close “Network” tab

  10. Open Safari (or other browser) and go to the Library webpage

You should be able to access all library e-resources (i.e. Library Search, Databases, E-Journals, and E-books- see Start with eResources section).

When you have finished searching Library e-resources, be sure to go back to the Proxies tab (Steps 1-4) and uncheck all of the boxes under “Select a protocol to configure”. Click “OK”, then “Apply” and close the “Network” tab.

Available to active UNIC users 24 hrs after registration with the Library.

iOS Devices

Configuration Directions for iOS Devices:

  1. Open “Settings” app
  2. Select “Wi-Fi” and tap the network you use
  3. Scroll down to the “HTTP Proxy” section and tap “Manual”
  4. In the “Server” box type: proxy.unic.ac.cy
  5. In the “Port” box type: 8080
  6. Turn on “Authentication” and type your:
    • Username: Student ID number (e.g. U000N0010) or Library User ID (for staff)
    • Password: date of birth in reverse order yyyymmdd (e.g. 19870218)
  7. Exit the “Settings” app
  8. Open the Library website

You should be able to access all library e-resources (i.e. Library Search, Databases, E-Journals, and E-books - see Start with eResources section).

When you have finished searching Library e-resources, be sure to go back to the network settings (Steps 1-2), scroll down to the HTTP Proxy section and tap “Off”.

Available to active UNIC users 24 hrs after registration with the Library.

Android Devices

Configuration Directions for Android Devices:

  1. Open “Settings” app

  2. Select “Connections” and then “Wi-Fi”

  3. Tap and hold the wireless network that you use

  4. Select “Manage network settings” and then “Show advanced options”

  5. Change Proxy to “Manual”

  6. In the “Proxy host name” box type: proxy.unic.ac.cy

  7. In the “Proxy port” box type: 8080

  8. Select “Authenticate Server” and type your:

    • Username: Student ID number (e.g. U000N0010) or Library User ID (for staff)

    • Password: date of birth in reverse order yyyymmdd (e.g. 19870218).

  9. Tab “Save” and exit the “Settings” app

  10. Open the Library website

You should be able to access all library e-resources (i.e. Library Search, Databases, E-Journals, and E-books - see Start with eResources section).

When you have finished searching Library e-resources, be sure to go back to the network settings (Steps 1-4), change Proxy to “None” and “Save” the settings.

Available to active UNIC users 24 hrs after registration with the Library.
