HSE Staff: new login method using HSE Library account

New login method, using HSE Library accounts

A new method of accessing online resources was introduced in November 2022, with a HSE Library account.

It enables HSE staff and students to

  • access the book catalogue &
    •  borrow books &
    • to request inter library loans for articles and books not available in the Library collection, &
  • to access online resources

Register for a HSE Library Account

To access HSE Library e-resources, you no longer need a separate 'Athens'/OpenAthens account. The exact resources available will depend on your location. Your library account will let you log in to OpenAthens. You can register online.

You will need:

  1. A valid email address - Please use your organisational email address
  2. Your employee number
  3. When registering you will need to choose your geographic area and the hospital or service where you work
  4. If you are on a temporary contract please chose Temporary and enter the end date.
  5. For HSE staff your resources are listed on the eResources A to Z and in your Athens Account.

After registering online, it can take upto 3 working days for the account approval. Contact your local library if you need the account approved quickly.

Section 38 and Partners organizations

Registration

Any staff member working in a Section 38/39 organisation who is interested in registering for an eHealth Library Account should e-mail hselibrary@hse.ie and a member of staff will determine your eligibility.

eResources requiring their own accounts

Online resources requiring their own account

Note: For some online resources, such as BMJ Learning, you will need to create an account on their platform and link it to your library account.
Another example is Web of Science - to access additional features such as EndNote Online, you need to create an account on Web of Science when logged in.

To register and download the UpToDate app it is best to register for an UpToDate account when on the HSE network.
From the HSE network (HSE Hospitals etc) it may be possible to access resources without logging in. This is because the resource is available on certain HSE or organisational networks.
